Save Massachusetts Wildlife

In February 2024, Save Arlington Wildlife founder and director Laura Kiesel has recently launched The Save Massachusetts Wildlife Education Fund, a fiscally sponsored project of the nonprofit, Mission:Earth. By early 2025, the organization’s name was officially changed to Save Massachusetts Wildlife, or “Save Mass Wildlife” for short. In September, Mission.Earth shuttered and Save Mass Wildlife became a project of the fiscal sponsor, NOPI–which stands for “The Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives.”

The Mission and Vision of Save Massachusetts Wildlife is to educate the public about the presence and importance of wildlife in the Commonwealth, including in our state’s urban and suburban ecosystems. More specifically, Save Mass Wildlife raises awareness about the toxic and often fatal effects rodenticides (rat poisons) have on wildlife and companion animals, as well as other dangers such as discarded and abandoned fishing line waste.

Save Mass Wildlife has already funded a number of projects and initiatives. In September 2024, we aired our first educational video, an animated short that raises awareness about the harms caused by rodenticides–which is currently available on YouTube. From November 2024 until the end of August 2025, Save Mass Wildlife offered funding to defray costs of necropsies and liver panel testing of animals that died in the greater Boston metro area to determine if they were exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) and if so, if that exposure was indicated to be a contributing factor to their deaths. Of the approximately 50 animals tested, virtually all of them tested positive for AR exposure and all but a handful tested in lethal range of exposure and exhibited signs of internal bleeding (the general standard for ruling ARs as a cause of death). In May 2025, Save Mass Wildlife kicked off its first billboard campaign, featuring two billboards in the Boston metro area warning about the threats ARs pose to non-target animals like pets and wildlife. One billboard was displayed on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, near Porter Square. The second billboard was displayed in Quincy center near the MBTA station. In October 2025, Save Mass Wildlife kicked off its second billboard campaign–this time at the South Station MBTA station. The spot is a digital billboard featuring three billboard slides.
